Spring Term Home Learning
Friday 8th January 2021
Happy Friday Class 4. Well done for all your hard work this week I have been so impressed with your work ethic. Thank you for sharing your work with me via class email. It has been lovely catching up and speaking to your families throughout the week. I will hopefully catch up with the rest of you at the start of next week, tell your families to get an eye out for my call.
Maths
We are now at the end of our perimeter unit in Maths. To recap and see how you have got on with this topic, please have a go at this end of unit assessment. I have attached the answers so ask an adult to mark your assessment sheet at the end. Take your time with each question and read the question carefully.
Writing
Hopefully yesterday you read chapter 1 of Mr Stink and have found some interesting things out about Mr Stink and Chloe. I would like you to make a mind map of one of these characters and write down everything you know about them so far.
Extension Challenge
I like you to compare the two characters of Chloe and Mr Stink. What do they have in common? What is different about their lives? For example, Mr Stink is homeless and poor. Whereas Chloe is from a relatively well off background and lives a 'posh life' according to her mother. That is one difference amongst the two characters to get you started. Here is a picture of both characters from the front cover to give you something visual to base your similarities and differences on.
Times Tables
Keep practising your times tables on either Times Table Rockstars or Numbots.
Thursday 7th January 2021
Happy Thursday Class 4. We are all nearly at the end of our first week of home learning - well done for all of your hard work so far I am so impressed with you all.
It is strange not having you all in the classroom everyday, but I am sending you all a virtual smile and thumbs up each morning for your hard work! Mrs Cook has very kindly added some R.E. activities for today, so please have a look at those below.
Maths
Please watch the introduction video below that explains what we are going to focus on today for maths. The explanation video will show you the correct way to work out the answers to these perimeter questions. Both videos are underneath this post, below the Mr Stink resources.
Worksheet 1
Extension Challenges
Writing
Have a read of chapter one of Mr Stink. I have attached a PDF version for those who don't have a copy at home, as well as the comprehension questions. Remember, all of the answers are in the book for the retrieval questions. However, those marked with a lightbulb are opinion-based questions where you will have to think of an answer and give a clear explanation.
RE with Mrs. C!
Good morning year 4, I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas resting and spending precious time with your families.
It's Thursday which means RE, hooray! We are beginning a new unit of work called 'GOSPEL.' Can you remember the icon for this from the front page of your RE Book?
This is the picture for GOSPEL. Look closely! What can you see? The word Gospel means 'Good News.' Do you know what the good news is?
The main question we will be trying to answer is 'What kind of world did/does Jesus want?'
What do you think is the answer to this question? I would like you to create a poster which answers the question.
You can use words, pictures, symbols, diagrams - anything which help your poster answer the question.
Remember to email your work to Mr. Quinn so that he can share it with me too! I can't wait to see your posters.
PE with Mrs. C!
Thursday means it's PE, yes! It might be a little trickier at home but we'll do our best to keep active. Move, move, move!
I'm going to be using boxing based fitness moves to keep you active and fit. One of the main ways that boxers stay fit is skipping/jump rope. I would like you to learn how to skip or if you can already skip, we will work on your technique for different skipping moves.
Watch these videos below to help.
Beginning skipping video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xS4p3ImIw3g
Improving skipping video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epf_CkpjIZ4
This week I would like you to try and skip for 10-15 minutes most days, this will really help you improve. Find those skipping ropes and let's get going! I'm joining in too.
DON'T GIVE UP! Remember learning a new skill is sometimes hard and takes time.
If you don't have a skipping rope or can't borrow one, please email Mr. Quinn who will let me know and I can drop one off at your home for you to borrow.
Happy Skipping!
Wednesday 6th January 2021
Happy Wednesday Class 4. I hope you all managed to complete some of the activities from yesterday. Hopefully at some point we can all share our work together on Zoom and catch up properly. I will send more information about this at a later date.
For those doing home learning, I will be contacting your families this week at some point to see how you are getting on. Please expect a call at some point before the end of Friday.
Morning Task
Here is today's morning task. Each day we will alternate between Maths and English. Today's focus is Maths.
English
Today, I would like you to have a read of Mr Stink's blurb from the back of the book. Do you think it is a good blurb? Is it engaging? What would you have done differently? Write a response to the blurb first of all weighing up the pros and cons. Next, have a go at making your own blurb using engaging descriptions and sophisticated vocabulary.
"Chloe is just about the loneliest girl in the world. But then she meets Mr Stink, the local tramp. Yes, he smells a bit - but he's the only person who's ever been nice to her. So when Mr Stink needs a place to stay, Chloe decides to hide him in the garden shed!
But Chloe's about to learn that some secrets have a way of leading to disaster. And speaking of secrets, there just might be more to Mr Stink than meets the nose..."
Maths
Following on from yesterday's recap on perimeter, I would like you to have a go at these questions. All you will need is a piece of paper and a pencil. Remember, each square is 1cm in length e.g. the top measurement of the letter T shape would be 3cm in length as there are 3 squares in length.
Have a go at these extension questions. Remember, when converting cm to m there are 100 cm in 1m, and 1m is made up of 100 cm.
Art
I would like you to have a go at sketching a picture of Mr Stink from our new class novel. You can see the illustration from the front cover on yesterday's home learning post. What do you think he would look like? What would he be wearing? Take your time and be patient, you can't rush art!
Here is an example to give you some ideas.
Tuesday 5th January 2021
A welcome back video for Class 4 from Mr Quinn and Mrs Skelton.
Happy New Year Class 4. Hope you all had a lovely christmas at home with your families. I went back to Ireland to spend christmas at home with my own family, but I am glad to be back in Newcastle again! Here is some Maths and English for you all to have a go at. Before the holidays, we were looking at perimeter in Maths so have a go at these questions to recap our learning.
Maths:
Have a go at these perimeter problem solving questions. All you will need is a pencil and a piece of paper to do your working out. Remember, each square is 1cm. For example, the first blank coloured square is 4cm in length on the top and bottom as there is 4 squares (4 squares = 4cm).
Extension Questions
If you have a ruler at home, have a go at these extension questions. Draw a square with a total perimeter of:
1. 20cm
2. 12cm
3. 24cm
4. 16cm
5. 8cm
English
Here is our new class novel for this half term - Mr Stink by the amazing David Walliams. Some of you may know David Walliams as a judge on Britain's Got Talent. He is also a very popular children's author (and one of my favourites!). Last year's class loved this book and so did I, hopefully you will love it too. To start us off, I want you to focus on the front cover and answer these questions:
1. What can you tell from the front cover?
2. Can you describe the three characters based on their appearances?
3. What synonyms can you think of relating to the word 'stink'?
4. What do the colours yellow and red make you think of?
5. Have you read any of David Walliams other books? If so, what do you think of him as an author?
I would also love to hear all about your experiences during the christmas holidays. Write me a couple of paragraphs describing what you go up to at home during the break.

Extension
One of the coaches adds another 12 passengers at the last minute and another coach has 3 less passengers. How many passengers are there now in total after these changes?
Reading
This will soon be our next class novel. I would like you to answer these 3 questions from what can you see on the front cover.
1. What do you think this book is going to be about? What clues can you use (i.e. picture, title, colour scheme).
2. Why does the front cover have 'scratch' marks on the bottom right corner? What might this symbolise?
3. If you were training a dragon, how do you think you would find the process? Why?
History
This week we have been learning about Romulus and Remus, and the founding of Rome. Have a go at answering these comprehension questions. Don't worry if you haven't got a printer, just write the answers on a sheet of paper or in a notebook.
